Many Americans identify themselves about their sexuality as well as being an American, which can cause some issues. While it has been legal for same-sex relationships to be active between consenting couples since 2003 (Lawrence v. Texas), there have been many boundries yet for those who identify themselves as homosexual or transgender to overcome.

Amnesty International is a global movement of people fighting against injustices and promoting human rights. Their campaign on LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) rights has led the way for many Americans in being comfortable to accept their sexuality and embrace it, so they join the cause and fight for equality. The Human Rights Campaign are very similar to Amnesty International, as they also work towards civil rights for everyone regardless of sexuality.One key argument they are both involved in is for the ability of same-sex marriage, as currently only 17 states including California and New Mexico have legalized same-sex marriage, which means that it is still illegal in currently 33 states.
Amnesty International and The Human Rights Campaign say that the choice of love and relationships should be a human right freely given to all, and that people should not be discriminated against just because of their sexual orientation. They regularly organise Pride marches, and hold a Pride month every June to raise awareness by peaceful protest.
One breakthrough aided by these organisations is Don't Ask Don't Tell. This is a policy whereby the military are not allowed to enquire into sexuality, and reject applications on this basis alone. It also prohibits against discrimination because of sexuality within the military.
